74-year-old man was today shot dead by a suspected contract killer allegedly at the behest of an underworld gangster in suburban Goregaon, the second firing incident in the city this week, police said.

The assailant shot dead Angare Pujari (74), owner of Monginis cake shop in the suburb, from a close range when he was at the bakery this afternoon.

The shooter was overpowered by passersby and the staff, who later handed him over to police while Angare was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

According to police, the accused Kushal Sharma (29) had gone to the shop where he ate a pastry and requested for a chocolate. After a while, he went to cash counter where Angare was sitting.

"He then whipped out a revolver and fired one round at Angare with the bullet hitting the victim's neck. The shocked staff and passersby caught hold of the accused till police reached the spot. The profusely bleeding Angare was rushed to nearby private hospital where he was declared dead," said Surendra Paithankar, senior inspector at Goregoan Police Station.

A revolver and three live rounds were recovered from the accused, police said.

Additional Police Commissioner Ramrao Pawar said, "We suspect he may have killed the victim at the behest of some gangster."

The deceased, who used to run a local club earlier, had a year ago received extortion calls from gangster Hemant Pujari, police said.

"We are probing the murder case from all angles including if Hemant Pujari was behind his killing. The accused is not co-operating with us," another officer added.

Hernandez-Martinez of Cincinnati faced the death penalty after being convicted Thursday of two counts of aggravated murder

Hernandez-Martinez of Cincinnati faced the death penalty after being convicted Thursday of two counts of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and participating in a criminal gang. He was a complicitor in the July 13, 2008, gang-motivated killing of Evelvin Osveli-Morales and Marlon Enamordo-Gomez outside the former Casa Tequila on Ohio 4 in Fairfield, according to police.
Instead of a death sentence, Butler County Common Pleas Judge Michael Sage gave him 78 years to life in prison, meaning the 24-year-old Mexico native would not be eligible for parole until he’s 102.
The Spanish-speaking Hernandez-Martinez smiled when an interpreter told him the jury recommended he receive 30 years to life for each homicide.
Defense attorney David Washington asked Sage to run the sentences concurrently. But Sage called the murders “egregious” and ordered the defendant to serve consecutive prison terms.
Sage said Hernandez-Martinez would be eligible for parole after 30 years on each of the murder charges and tacked on 18 additional years for the other charges for a total sentence of 78 years to life.
“Essentially, he received a life without parole sentence,” said Washington, who was disappointed, but relieved his client avoided the death penalty.
Throughout the trial, Hernandez-Martinez maintained he was not in the car when the drive-by shooting happened.
“He was not the shooter,” Washington said of his client.
Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser called the sentencing “a victory for civilized society.” He said it sends a message to violent offenders that they could spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Gmoser said Hector Alvarenga-Retana, the alleged trigger man in the double-murder case, will be returned to Ohio soon from a North Carolina jail to face trial.
Hernandez-Martinez begged the jury to spare his life during testimony Monday morning. He spoke in broken English as he read a prepared statement. He also spoke for about an hour through an interpreter about his difficult life in Mexico before arriving in the United States.
“I am not without feeling, I am a human being” Hernandez-Martinez said, adding he loves his 2-year-old son, Oliver.
“I made a bad choice by joining the MS-13 (gang),” he said. “But that doesn’t mean I am a killer.”
Hernandez-Martinez said he was homeless after being thrown out of a cousin’s house and was influenced by MS-13 gang members who offered him food and a place to stay.
“I took it (the gang) as a joke. I never took it seriously,” he said, noting members later threatened to kill him if he didn’t obey.

David Wilson, 34, of Washington, DC ., a leader of a violent drug gang, was sentenced today to 45 years and eight months in prison for his role in two murders and other crimes committed by the Congress Park Crew

David Wilson, 34, of Washington, DC ., a leader of a violent drug gang, was sentenced today to 45 years and eight months in prison for his role in two murders and other crimes committed by the Congress Park Crew, announced United States Attorney Ronald C Machen Jr; James W McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office; and Cathy L Lanier, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Wilson, also known as Cool Wop, was sentenced this afternoon by the Honorable Judge Richard W Roberts in United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Wilson was one of six defendants prosecuted by the government during an eight-month trial in 2007 before Judge Roberts. During that trial, the government presented evidence that Wilson, along with his five co-defendants, Antwuan Ball, aka Big Ant; Gregory Bell, aka Boy-Boy; Joseph Jones, aka Jo-Jo; Dominic Samuels, aka Don; and Desmond Thurston, aka Daz, as well as others, were members of a crew that had engaged in a series of crimes, including crack cocaine dealing, armed robbery, attempted murder, and murder in the Congress Park neighborhood of Southeast Washington for more than a decade.

Since March of 2005, 18 individuals have been indicted in connection with this case. Wilson and his five-co-defendants were the final defendants remaining from the original March 2005 indictment. The others previously pled guilty or had been found guilty after trial. The jury in this trial acquitted the six defendants of the charged conspiracy in this case, but convicted them on 18 other felony charges stemming from violence and drug-dealing.

Wilson was convicted of a total of 11 charges, including two counts of first degree murder while armed and various charges related to the distribution of cocaine. The murder charges stemmed from the August 17, 1998 slayings of Ronnie “Squid” Middleton and Sabrina Bradley. Evidence showed that the killings were committed by Wilson as part of an ongoing turf war between the Congress Park Crew and one of its rivals, the 1-5 Mob. According to the government’s evidence, Middleton, 27, was the intended target in the attack, which took place in the early morning hours in the 1500 block of Congress Place SE.

Eugenio De La Cruz's 1-year-old son, Isaiah, was shot Sunday night inside his family's Orange County home as he sat in a walker, according to the station. The bullet went through the front door and struck the child in the back of the head, authorities said.

De La Cruz said at least two other bullets were fired into the house, but said no one else in the family was injured.

Paramedics rushed the child to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where he immediately underwent surgery. Doctors told the boy's family that the bullet traveled through the child's brain and remains lodged near his forehead. The boy is reportedly expected to survive.

Deputies, meanwhile, are investigating the incident as a drive-by-shooting.

Mexican authorities say soldiers have raided a drug gang's camp in northeastern Mexico and killed eight gunmen in a shootout.

Mexican authorities say soldiers have raided a drug gang's camp in northeastern Mexico and killed eight gunmen in a shootout.

The Defense Department says gunmen opened fire on troops as they approached the camp outside San Fernando, a town in the border state of Tamaulipas.

A military statement says nine other people were detained in the raid Friday, including a woman who claimed she had been kidnapped. It says soldiers seized 10 guns, marijuana, 58 camouflage uniforms and 11 bulletproof jackets.

The statement does not say what gang ran the camp, but San Fernando is in the heart of territory controlled by the Zetas cartel. Zetas were blamed for the massacre of 72 South and Central Americans at a ranch outside the town last August.

Twitter is growing rapidly in Mexico, where some government agencies have started using the social networking site to dispel rumors and quickly provide information about violent incidents.

"It's not about warning of shootouts. The reason why the account (@sspdgo for the Public Safety Secretariat in Durango state) was created is to provide accurate information at the time of the incidents, with the goal of giving certainty and calming the citizenry," police spokesman Fernando Fonseca told Efe.

Of the Twitter users in Mexico, governments, institutions, parties and politicians account for just 0.60 percent, while educational and academic institutions represent 1.4 percent, a report released this month by consulting firm Mente Digital said.

The situation, however, appears to be changing in Mexico.

President Felipe Calderon, who has more than 505,000 followers and has posted over 1,000 messages, has been using Twitter for months to make announcements.

The Public Safety Secretariat in Durango, located in northern Mexico, created an account on the social networking site just over a week ago on the "direct orders" of Gov. Jorge Herrera Caldera and has been promoting its presence on Twitter.

Best friends who fell out over gangster King Ratt after split

Best friends who fell out over gangster King Ratt after split : "Gangster Brian Rattigan's sister Sharon is now at loggerheads with his ex girlfriend, Natasha McEnroe, following the couple's breakup.

Two male associates of Rattigan recently tried to kill McEnroe's new boyfriend at her Ranelagh home and the couple have been warned they are in serious danger.

The Herald can today reveal the background to a rift between the two women closest to Rattigan, which developed as he languished in a jail cell.

Natasha McEnroe was thrown out of Sharon Rattigan's family home in Drimnagh after she split with the gangster last November. The split came about after a third woman, who also lives in Drimnagh, contacted King Ratt weeks earlier and alleged that McEnroe was seeing someone else.

McEnroe fell out with her oldest pal Sharon Rattigan over the claim, and quickly moved out of the Drimnagh house.

A source said: 'Sharon and Natasha were the best of friends for years, and Natasha even moved into the Rattigan family home with her daughter. But rumours started to fly around and then Natasha dumped Brian.

Sharon has stood by her brother and Natasha has moved out. Since the break-up they don't see each other.'"

Millionaire racehorse owner killed in Mafia-style hit - Australasia, World

Run, Baby, Run: What Every Owner, Breeder & Handicapper Should Know About Lasix in RacehorsesMillionaire racehorse owner killed in Mafia-style hit - Australasia, World"Melbourne's reputation as a city with a dark underbelly has been reinforced by the gangland-style execution of a millionaire racehorse owner rumoured to have links with organised crime.

Les Samba, 60, was shot up to five times in the head and back in a suburban street after an argument with a man he had gone to meet and apparently knew. Police are investigating several leads but say there is no evidence to confirm reports a contract"

The murder, which took place last Sunday night, shocked Melbournites. For years such killings were almost routine in the city, as rival crime families fought a bitter turf war. That war is now over, with most of the protagonists dead or in jail – but it seems Mafia-style hits are back in fashion.
Mr Samba, a former trainer who once claimed to keep a secret store of A$850,000 (£530,000) in cash because he did not trust banks, was linked with a number of colourful characters. They included Ron Medich, a Sydney property developer with whom he co-owned horses. Mr Medich was recently released on bail after being charged with murdering his former business associate, Michael McGurk.
This week, police questioned Mr Medich, and also Mr Samba's son-in-law, Danny Nikolic, a champion jockey. They said that while neither were suspects, they planned to interview as many of Mr Samba's associates as possible, to establish a motive. Mr Nikolic is separated from Mr Samba's daughter, Victoria, with whom he has a three-year-old child.
The killer is believed to be a man witnesses heard Mr Samba arguing with before the shooting, who fled on foot. Several men in a dark-coloured Mercedes parked nearby, which left after the incident, are also being sought by homicide squad detectives.
Mr Samba, who lived in Sydney and was known as a big spender at thoroughbred sales, had flown to Melbourne on Saturday to inspect horses being auctioned this week. On Sunday he drove a hire car to the meeting with his killer.
"By all appearances, he has gone there willingly," said Detective Inspector John Potter.
The men argued, Mr Samba tried to run away, and ended up face-down in a pool of blood.
Mr Samba was a professional gambler and declared himself bankrupt ten years ago after he and his wife, Deirdre, were investigated for evading tax on $1.2m. He was regarded as "a murky, shadowy customer", according to local media.
"It's not a shock, he mixed around with all the crooks," one racing industry source told the Adelaide Advertiser. Another said: "He was always knocking around with bad people."
Among those he reportedly mixed with in the past was a notorious Sydney underworld figure, the late Abe Saffron. Mr Samba was also linked with a Perth trainer, George Way, who was disqualified for life in the mid-Eighties for doping two horses. Mr Samba himself was disqualified in several states.
Police are hoping his mobile phone records may reveal details of his final hours and shed light on his killer's identity.
Mr Nikolic said: "I'm very surprised and very shocked that Les has been killed. I didn't have much to do with the bloke, so I wouldn't know anything about why this could happen."
Mr Medich said he was "saddened" to learn of Mr Samba's death.

Judge lends accused gangster tie for trial of Vincent 'Gorgeous' Basciano for murder

Judge lends accused gangster tie for trial of Vincent 'Gorgeous' Basciano for murder : "He's on trial for murder, so it's not surprising that mob boss Vincent Basciano would want to put his best face forward.

But when he panicked over facing the public without a tie today, help came from an unexpected quarter - the judge.

Basciano, nicknamed 'Gorgeous' for his usually-coiffed hair and dapper suits, was just minutes away from appearing at the Brooklyn Federal Court in New York today when he panicked about his informal garb.

He was clad in just a grey suit and a white shirt.

His lawyer George Goltzer brought the issue to the attention of Judge Nicholas Garaufis, who did not hesitate.

He immediately offered to lend the accused murderer and organised crime boss the tie he keeps on hand for emergencies."
